I remember a "behind the scenes" story in Time magazine that came out while the movie was being made in which they discussed the use of a latex prosthesis for Montalban. I seem to remember Montalban actually commenting about how it was uncomfortable but he liked to wear it anyway. It is very strange that he would later claim that that was all him, unless he was just joking.
