I find it amusing that those of you questioning why thousands of devout Catholics are mourning the loss of their spiritual leader are the same people who, only a few weeks ago, were so saddened by the news that drug-addled half-wit Hunter S Thompson topped himself.

I can't remember anyone sparing a thought for the "gazillions" in that thread.

Wow. I find myself agreeing with KFF here. Not that this is a rare thing. I just don't see why it'd be blasphemous to not give a crap about Hunter S. Thompson, but it's stupid to care about the pope. I honestly couldn't give much of a crap about either of them, but for those of you who want to mourn the loss of someone you don't even know, go for it. I don't have a problem with that. Just don't be a hypocrite and bash someone else for mourning the loss of someone you don't like.

I'm reminded of the whole Clinton/Reagan thing. The Democrats were all bashing Reagan and calling him a bastard and whatnot when he died, while the Republicans were mourning his loss, then when Clinton got sick, the Democrats went on defensive mode and got offended that Clinton was being attacked. Both sides were being idiots about the whole thing. Don't attack the dead. It's fucked up.

I guess people mourn dead people they don't know and then insult other dead people they don't know, because being hypocritical is human nature. We get sad about the tsunami and then laugh at the newest Darwin awards. It's hard to REALLY care about anyone you've never met, and I don't think I've ever shed a tear over someone I didn't know personally... but I came pretty close when Hunter died, and I can definitely understand if someone cried when the Pope died too. So I'm not gonna start pissing on his grave just yet. And for the record, as far as Popes go, I actually think he was pretty cool despite his draconian views on celibacy in the priesthood and contraception. But hey... baby steps. Any Pope that tried to be too radical, probably would have been excommunicated by the fundamentalist circle jerk in the Vatican.

My point was, people die. The Pope isn't really that much more important than anyone else, and if he is, it's because somebody else said so. I guess I don't understand the whole religious puppeteer act that the Pope's position is in full. I don't really want to. The last time I checked, the Pope's name wasn't in the fucking bible, so he probably shouldn't be worshipped as far as I'm concerned. Remember the golden calf? Yeah, that's what the Pope is. One big fucking metallic steer that the gypsies dance around and pray to.

Hunter S. Thompson was famous for being Hunter S. Thompson. The Pope was not famous for being Karol Joseph Wojtyla.

Gazillions was not a word I used. I know what the Pope has done, as I happen to know a little bit about him. Did you know he was responsible for saving quite a few Jews during the Nazi occupation of Poland? He also rolled back quite a few progressive measures inside the Church. He is also the head of an organization that is riddled with pedophiles, and he himself has done next to nothing to address or punish the representatives of HIS church when they are outed as pedophiles.

Thompson, I can say I feel more spiritually connected to Hunter S. Thompson. I don't feel a hell of a lot of spirituality coming from Da Pope's way.

There's a very simple reason for that. I have an opinion on everything. Why? Because I care about everything. Why? Because I don't spend my time drinking my troubles, pain, and thoughts away. I don't know what her intentions were. Organized religion in general is an overblown money-making scheme meant to capitalize on the fact that people are a spiritually searching species. When you become a part of that, you facilitate that basic principle. All Catholics are a part of that, so I am not sure why they WOULDN'T be attacked.

My comment was my opinion. I'm pretty sure I'm free to attack catholics, jews, and whoever else I want to in this forum, but that wasn't really what I was doing. I'm pointing out the fact that we idolize people without concentrating on humanity as a mass that's becoming a huge waste. Why mourn the death of a man who was put into a position of power over a man who's fighting for his family and is shot in Iraq, standing up for his beliefs? Or mourn the man down the street who died of a heart attack and left behind a family? We don't mourn that guy, so we really shouldn't mourn the others if it's not more well balanced. That's what I'm saying.
