Back when Poker was still cool and a niche sport (post rounders, but not quite in the public psyche) I started to play, and at first I thought it was something I was really good at, and could maybe even make a career out of (seriously at the time I was a lazy bum and had aspirations to be a writer but no sort of clue as to how to live, so poker seemed like an interesting way to spend my day and meet a few characters, and casinos round my place usually had complimentary buffets on to keep the mostly chinese players happy and gambling so food was provided). A few times at the casino I'd notice the same players time and again, and they'd all have interesting nicknames like 'the Professor' or 'lucky' (alright not so interesting names, but nicknames non the less). I talked it over with a few of my friends at our weekly game (small stakes, no heart aches) whom I was schooling in the game (although I was no expert myself mind) about possible nicknames, but I also chatted to them about the fact that I had applied to join the British Diplomatic service.
I didn't go through with this, due to most of the work being handling statistics, and not the cool sit around the pool in some tropical climate drinking cocktails sort of job I had envisioned, still the idea of being a Governor of a small tropical country appealed to my inner dictator, and so The Governor became my poker nickname for a while. Years later when I found this site I wanted a good name for my strip, and TheGovernor just seemed a good fit (I forwent the space and the underscore option), although I had stopped using it as a poker nickname by this point (for that matter I had stopped going to casinos aside from the odd tournament), and this is probably the only site I use that nickname on, due to the fact I hate putting numbers after nicknames, and the governor is hardly the most original name in internet land. I have been known to use Jedi Knight of Ni, but thats both really geeky and sad in equal measure.
