Not at all true. For instance, on USENET, about a decade ago, I wrote, "I'm not a piano, but I play one on TV."

...and any time I mention that I play piano, I always mention that I do not currently have one, and have not had regular access to one since I moved out of home eight years ago. Kinda makes it hard to pratice regularly.
