If Bush was prepared to do that, he doesn't count as remotely evil in my book.
Even if he'd support the bombing of civilian targets in "enemy" countries?
He'd sacrifice his own life in order to prevent a massacre which, as you accept, pushed his approval ratings skyward and gave him an excuse to do whatever his backers want? Why would he do this?
He is, after all, the President of the United States, and also a Texan. He might not blink at the razing of Iraqi sewage and water treatment plants and the resulting cholera outbreak that killed half a million people, mostly kids, but JESUS, man! He wouldn't stand by while religious nutballs blew up half of New York City AND the Pentagon AND took a shot at the Capitol (probably). I mean, call him evil, but this is like saying Tojo engineered the bombing of Hiroshima.

I can't find where I ever called W altruistic, but if I did, I hereby take it back.

I think the "blood for oil" thing and the ties to corporate crime and the death squads down South might mitigate his claim to sainthood.

I'll bet if he had the chance, he'd take a bullet rather than see those towers go down. He's still a congenital criminal and a brain-damaged lapdog of a President, but I think you're being a bit hard on him.

I didn't suggest that the government engineered this - as I said, I doubt they would have the nerve. Anyway, it's not a far comparison: Tojo and the Japanese authorities at the time gained nothing from the destruction of Hiroshima, while the people behind the chimp have clearly benefited from this.

Realpolitik is as contemptuous of one country's dead as it is of another's. If you want to get anywhere, it doesn't make sense naively to distinguish between equipping Colombian paramilitaries and allowing your own populace to be slaughtered. Operation Northwood is one of several examples that just went to show that - but perhaps you think the government has become markedly less cynical since the 60s.

I agree that they've tied us out like goats, but not that they would do it consciously. I think they tell themselves at least some lies. I don't think the US apparatus saw it coming and chose not to stop it. I think it's more accurate to say they could have and should have seen it coming, but chose not to. A nice distinction, maybe.

Hey!! Leave the TEXAN part out of this..yeesh! I had to inform everyone that not ALL Texans are Republican bible thumping, rifle toting idiots.

Bush, Clinton...Reagan...Carter....regardless of who was President there are always going to be the idjits who see a conspiracy in everything. Do I think that our government has its share of shysters and spin doctors? Hell yes!

The fact is the US backed Bin Laden to get the Russkies out and then forgot to control their Frankenstein. Bush 1 had the chance to get Hussain out...so did Clinton...neither chose to..now look where we are again his ugly mustachio is popping up.

The President is not a political mastermind, I think being elected by the general populace ensures that fact. He's a puppet played by those behind the scenes for their interests. Any day now Qaddafi is going to rear his ugly head....

and why can't I stop typing with these freaking ......
I don't know, must be the fault of some stone thrower on the West Bank. All in all, I wish the US would just stay out of everyone's business for a month. No money, no handouts, no interference. Then let's see how many of them start screaming for us to come back. Now I must return to rant incessently to my local congress idiot about slave reparations.

"You want your 40 acres and a mule? Fine..here ya go."
"Wait...this is 40 acres and a Kia...in ALASKA???"

Some quick notes...

The WTC towers didn't fall from the top or the bottom - they both fell from the middle, roughly where the planes hit. The burning jet fuel liquefied the steel supports in the walls, a few floors collapsed, and the shock of that impact made the whole thing collapse in both cases.

As for the US government staying out of other countries' business for a month, sure there'd be people whining for them to come back...

...US-installed puppet dictators suddenly finding themselves with no support, since their military and/or police now have no funding or weapons, and the common people who despise them have no method of control...

...US-based multinational corporations who control government officials with hefty bribes while the actual people of the nation see their rivers poisoned, their forests razed,, and their air filled with smog...

...the World Bank and IMF, they'd be sad to see US financing and military muscle go from the world...

...that said, I doubt that regular everyday Nigerians, Argentinians, Afghans, or countless others would be too sad about it.
