Diamonds are only "precious" on earth, and in the present. What you're seeing as "gold" is actual bars of gold-pressed Latinum.

According to Star Trek (Deep Space Nine specifically)gold-pressed Latinum is a universal currency in the future, at a time when diamonds (and all forms of material wealth) have no meaning to humans. The Ferengi covet the Latinum.
