The solution is simple, but certainly not easy:

Keep doing the geek stuff, and do the creative stuff in your spare time. If possible, cut your IT hours to part-time, give yourself more of a chance. These days, with e-commerce everywhere, it's simple enough to do that kind of thing from home.
