When I was a senior in high school, I guess about five or six years ago now, a friend of mine from New Jersey had met a lot of people by hanging out on local BBSes. That same year, there was a series of shootings in public places. It so happened that some psycho walked into a mall in South Jersey (the name escapes me -- it starts with a 'D', it's on the tip of my tongue, and I'll kick myself when someone reminds me) and opened fire on the crowd with an automatic weapon, apparently without reason or direction. On one BBS, which my friend did not frequent, a group of people who knew one or more of those wounded/killed in this tragedy had been offering one another consolation and sympathy for several days following the incident. Something like two or three days after it occurred, a friend of my friend, who had no connection to the tragedy, and who knew nothing about the BBS or its visitors, logged on for the first time and, without bothering to read a single previous message, wrote a one-sentence post that said "I went to the mall this weekend and got shot."
I know, it's not so much "embarrassing" as "stupid" or "thoughtless". For my suggestion, let's say "speaking without thinking", also known as "putting one's foot in one's mouth".
