OK, call me simple if you need to, but I must be missing something. I see that you can sort your comics by score, well, I do that and they all re-sort. Now my question is, where's the score displayed at on here. I'd like to see how my comics are received and I can just get the order they're scored. If anyone can help, that'd be great.

Thanks

Damn, we have to get an FAQ on this forum...

Anyway, NO you can't see your comics' individual scores. However, working out which are your most popular is easy - go to your "My Comics" page and click on "Sort list by: Score". Now, if you do this immediately after making a new strip, that will have a score of zero, and will therefore be at the bottom of the list. If it is at the top, then the order is upside down - either read from the bottom, or click on the sorting link again to flip the order.

Oh, one last thing - the scores are effectively meaningless these days, since very few people bother to vote.

Of course, if you really want to be anal about it and figure out your scores, go to "list comics", and sort those by scores. It should be easy to figure out which end you're at -- if you see the ones that match the top ten list, go to the other end, and if you see racist claptrap that no one ever gave a vote to, stay there. Note that they are secondarily sorted chronologically; you can see all the zeroes from January right up to today. Then when the dates go back to the start of the year, you're looking at the ones with scores of 1. Continue through 200+ screens. Have fun!

I was wondering if that was because of the way voting works. On the one hand, making the vote random helps keep people from stuffing the ballot box, but maybe there is a way to encourage voting in a way that doesn't lead to Chicago/Florida style fraud. I've come up with a few ideas. I don't know how hard they would be to implement.

(Before listing them, let me say thanks Johnny! I love the site as it is and I don't mean this to sound like rabble rousing... Just making a suggestion.)

Voting Ideas
People must me logged in to vote.
You may only vote once per comic.
You may vote on any comic you surf up, even if you're looking at someone's personal collection.
You may not vote on your own comics.

As I list these I can see how it would get to be a pain in the ass. People could invent multiple log in IDs just to vote on their own crap. Just an idea to kick around.

Stay there? Racist.

I'm actually pretty sure that those racist strips have been set up by Johnny to always be at the bottom of the list. Because: a.) They never move, and b.) I have little faith that mankind as a whole is enlightened enough to never give those comics a vote.

But as someone mentioned before, by limiting those scores, those comics have actually been put in a much higher profile position. Irony.

Theoretically, this is already true. It just makes it look like you've voted while not logged in, but silently discards your vote. At least, it was that way at one point.

At one time, this was also true. My www.lowpass.net cookie has a long string in it which, according to Johnny, is my comic voting history. However, my www.stripcreator.com cookie does not have the same thing, so I guess he took that feature away. Ironically, if he did, I suspect it was to encourage voting. One of the reasons I stopped voting was because there were so many good comics that I had already voted on.

As you point out, these would probably encourage cheating.

My opinion is still that the reason voting is a crock is because scores are cumulative, rather than averages. Notice how many of the top scoring strips are from January or February, when there were only a few thousand or so comics total. Now there are 20,000. A comic that has been getting ones since January is still going to be a lot higher than one that was created last week and is getting tens. Especially since, the fewer comics there are, the more often they come up for voting.

Believe it or not... I don't think any comic on this site has scored more than 100 points. If that. Any old-timers or people who experimented with stuffing the ballot are welcome to comment on that estimate. But if it's accurate, that should give you some idea of the state of the voting process.

Johnny is apparently very busy lately, and I don't expect him to make any changes in the near future, whether he likes the ideas or not. That's not a jab at him, just a fact. I know how it is to be that busy.

What keeps me coming back are the Comic Contests and the other stuff we post on the message boards. As far as I'm concerned, that's where the real action is. I vote sometimes when I'm bored, and I give out 10s to anything I think is good, just to help it rise above the crap.

As for the racist claptrap, the reason it stays at the bottom of the pile is because, if I'm not mistaken, at the time those comics were created, it was possible both to vote for arbitrary comics, and to give them negative scores (the scale was -5 to +5 instead of 1 to 10). I didn't find this place until late January, so I might have the story wrong. But I'm pretty sure that anything on the low end of the sort-by-score list that's from January is down there because it still has a negative score.

And as for not being able to see scores, that's because there was too much cheating when you could. I guess now that people have only a vague idea of how much others think their work sucks, there's less motivation to cheat.

And I agree with DexX about needing a FAQ.

Actually, those comics did get votes, and plenty of them. They just happened to be written during a time when a) you could give negative scores, b) you could vote for specific comics and c) voting multiple times was easy as pie. They never move because their scores are WAYYY below zero.

Then maybe I should throw off my scooge-like outlook on mankind and adopt an optimistic view......Nah, a little voice in the back of my head says three people posted -5 fifty times each, equalling out 40 buttheads. Bah humbug.

Actually, that has some truth to it as well. But around then there were only like four people posting comics anyway. ;)

Yah, I remember the Qwert thread. Seemed funny because there were so few comics that everyone new everyone else's name.

But you were around back then. You're an OG, my friend. Tell us stories of coming up, and how you had to defend your comedic turf with voilent acts by the killer squirrel. Or was there even a killer squirrel then? "Back in my day we didn't even have the killer squirrel, we used to have to make stickman look menacing. Through 4 feet of snow!" :)

Not having a killer squirrel wasn't the half of it. I remember a time when there was no PC prop and no Satan!

Come to think of it, Dan, how did you get here so early? Did you visit Low Pass prior to the invention of the Strip Creator?

Re: having a FAQ: this would be really good, seeing as how we get someone asking how to see their scores about once a week. I know Johnny experimented with some code to make a messageboard post "stick" to the top of the list, but I don't think he got it to work. I guess we could ask him if we could write something up and then have him post it on the site. I'd be willing to put in some work on it, but I got here after the voting went to positive numbers only, so there'd have to be support from the old-old-timers (DexX and Big Evil Dan, I'm looking at you). Is there any general interest in this?
