People forget that before the PC people got really annoying, the proper referential pronoun for mixed groups of men and women was "himself." Due the the lack of a proper neuter or dual-gendered pronoun, and because of the intolerable ineloquence of having to add "or herself" or " / herself" to things, I still use "himself," as should the rest of the world.
