I was watching "Without A Trace" the other night. At one point in the show, this one bully kid says to a wimpy type kid, "Your Mom is a real MILF."

At first I was like, OMG!
Then, I was like, WTF?
Finally, I had to LOL.

Seriously, I was a bit shocked at first. Then, I sort of laughed. Then, my wife asked what was funny about that scene. I just said, "That one kid is funny looking."

So, when did MILF enter the national (or international) lexicon?

First time I heard it was in the first American Pie, which would've been 1999, I think.

I was lucky(?) enough to have been a fan of a local post-punk band named MILF back in the early 90s in Buffalo. So I learned early what it stood for. ;)

IMHO, I'm not surprised that MILF turned up in "American Pie." I haven't seen that movie, but I've heard a lot about it.

Still, it was strange to hear the term MILF in a serious drama. Another watershed moment for TV...

It reminded me of a commercial for Comcast Communications where these parents have a new baby, and the Dad is buying the kid a new tricycle online.

He says, "Look, honey, this is Da Bomb!" If that phrase wasn't dead already, the commercial surely killed it.

When are advertisers going to learn that it is never, ever okay to use slang in ads?

I saw that episode of Without a Trace too. I was a little surprised to hear that term in a TV show -- or at all, since I think the last time I heard it was in grade school -- but I thought it was an appropriate use of it. Much better than that Comcast commercial.

When I first learned the term back in grade school, I was told it stood for "Mom Who Loves Fucking", which I think makes more sense, despite the awkwardness of the pronunciation.
