I was getting my vodka from the freezer when I noticed that the seams in the back wall of the freezer on the left side looked melted and bowed in. Like by heat. A lot of heat. The freezer was still freezing things, and we've never noticed a problem before. Peering into the hole, I could see a red glow, like a toaster makes, that seemed to come from below the rift and I could see water dripping inside the hole. It was about that time that I heard a faint intermittent sizzling sound.
Now I don't know a whole lot about refrigerators, but that seems bad. I know they have some kind of tubing across the back usually, and it does generate heat to somehow create cooling, but I don't think they typically create enough heat to melt plastic.
Fearing an electrocution or electrical fire or demonic possession, I went ahead and unplugged the fridge and pulled it away from the wall a little bit. Also, when I unplugged it, the red light inside the fridge's insides immediately dimmed and went away, exactly like when you unplug a toaster.
I'm hoping someone can help me here. I basically just want to know that I'm doing the right thing. Because I'm going to have to inform my landlord (who isn't real happy with us as it is and just recently had to replace our dishwasher) and I'd hate to get him inside my house so he can tell me this is what freezers normally do and where's his fucking money?!

A refridgerater is a sort of reverse heat pump; it sucks all the heat out of the inside and lets it dissipate into the air. The problem is that dust accumulates in the back of fridges, and that keeps the heat from dissipating properly. This causes... problems.

Pull the thing away from the wall and use a couple of those cans of compressed air for computers to blow out all the dust and crap. Unplug it and clean the stuff manually if need be. If that doesn't help, hire a repairman or buy a new fridge.

it sounds like what your seeing are the heating coils which are usually behind the fridge, not inside of it. so if you pull the fridge out, you can get a better look at whats going on.

from your description, i'd guess HC is right and dust accumulated/something happened and the heating coils didn't absorb enough heat and transferred it to melt a seam away in the freezer. now the freezer is leaking onto the heating coils creating the sizzling sounds you hear.

i'd say for water damage reasons alone you probbly should tell your landlord about it. pull it out from the wall first and look at it to see if what i said is what seems to be happening. i'm a little surprised you haven't already had a water buildup if it is

Funny thing about this fridge is... the back part where all the fun coils and things are is covered. The back is totally flat. I'm probably going to try and pry it open tomorrow when I wake up, but... how about the red toaster light and the sizzling? Plus, where is the water coming from? It would have to be from inside the ceiling, because there's no water draining/leaking through the actual hole itself. I can see it dripping down from above. But, there's no puddle under the fridge, front or back. Weird, huh? I might have caught this thing right when it started, but that seems unlikely, as I'm a drunken idiot most of the time.

If it's flat you should still be able to unscrew the back plate. The water is probably condensation from somewhere, though where I wouldn't know. I'd seriously suggest getting a repairman. It might be cheaper than buying a new fridge.

The most I can gather is that the water is condensation of some kind? The coldness on the inside of the refrigerator combined with the heat between the walls probably creates some water... Or maybe I know nothing.

From what I can discern, you need to drink the vodka immediately to prevent it from reaching room temperature. STAT!

The refrigerant tubes that dissipate the heat could NEVER get hot enough to glow. What you were seeing must have been shorted wires from the fan or other electrical part of the fridge. That thing is busted. Your landlord has to replace it.

FYI, those tubes that dissipate heat are comprise the condenser. That's because as the hot refrigerant running through them transfers heat to the outside air, it cools and condenses. In the evaporator, an array of tubes inside the fridge, the opposite happens, cooling the air.

Well, the landlord came over and fixed it. Turns out the freezer kicked into auto-defrost mode and then never turned itself off. The landlord pulled out the inside freezer casing and said it was all melted to shit inside there. And then he put it back together and plugged it in and left. Hooray cheap landlord. I hope I don't burn to death because of your crazy fridge.

Next time this happens, move to Siberia and install fridge doors in your wall so that the entire outside is your fridge!

Though it'll be more of a freezer really.

Well that was redundant. Are any frozen dinners identifiable? "Well, looks like we have a brown thing, a bunch of green stuff, some off-white stuff and a much darker brown thing... I could guess as to what they're supposed to be, but I have no idea what they actually are."

Though that's a little wrong. I do enjoy the frozen dinner fake ribs. They're just pressed and formed pork bits. But they're damn tasty.
