Someone I barely know sent me an invitation to friendster yesterday. i signed up and for a couple minutes, i thought it was cool. then i realized that all my close friends would have no interest in it and i couldnt really see the point in it after that.

This looks suspiciously like one of those "Someone has a secret crush on you, please enter all the email addresses in your address book so we can sell them, er um, I mean, find out whether or not this person has a crush on you! Tee hee! Tee hee hee!

Except that you can opt not to use their invitation system and instead simply send messages to people you know, telling them about it. Also, most of the people who I know who I've found on it have been the net-savvy geeks who scoff at those recruit-ten-friends thingers.

You can also shut off the email notification thing in your preferences so it will never bother you, necessitating your logging in to let you know if people are trying to talk to you.

I'm signed up. I made sure to read their privacy policy, and they said they do not send SPAM or give e-mail addresses to third parties. Otherwise, I would've skipped it. I haven't noticed any extra SPAM since I signed up.

I've directly linked 7 friends, and I'm connected to 11,000 people. (Although this is largely because one of my friends was linked by someone with 9,000 connections.)

So far, I've found little use for the service.

I did that last week. My friends moved, so I pinpointed their address and e-mailed the map with all the offenders in their neighbourhood. Nothing like making your friends feel safe...hehe.

I also used to to figure out if the creepy guy hanging around one of the schools in the district I work for was a serious offender or a high risk offender.
